Description de produit
2,3-Dimethylaniline (2,3-xylidine) CAS 87-59-2
Product Introduction
2,3-Dimethylaniline (2,3-xylidine, CAS 87-59-2) is an aromatic amine used as a core intermediate in specialty chemical manufacturing — notably dye and pigment synthesis, hindered-phenol antioxidant intermediates, polymer and resin chemistry, and other downstream specialty processes. Commercial material is supplied in multiple grades with lot COA and SDS for supplier qualification and incoming quality control.
Storage & Handling
Store in original, tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from strong oxidizers and acids. Protect from heat and ignition sources; recommended storage is below 30 °C. Use closed transfer, local exhaust ventilation and appropriate PPE (chemical-resistant gloves, goggles and respiratory protection where required). Retain lot COA and SDS with each shipment and follow SDS for emergency response.
Synonyms
2,3-Dimethylaniline; 2,3-Xylidine; vicinal-xylidine
Basic Physical & Identification Properties
CAS Number 87-59-2
Molecular formula C₈H₁₁N
Molecular weight 121.18 g *mol⁻¹
EINECS / EC No. 201-755-0
Appearance Colorless to pale yellow viscous liquid
Melting point ≈ 2.5-3.5 °C
Boiling point ≈ 221-224 °C (at 760 mmHg)
Density ≈ 0.99-1.00 g*cm⁻³ (20-25 °C)
Solubility Slightly soluble in water; miscible with common organic solvents (alcohols, ethers, aromatics)
Flash point ≈ 96-97 °C (closed cup)
Application
  • Dye and pigment intermediates — Intermediate for azo, anthraquinone and other dye classes where substituted anilines are required.
  • Antioxidant intermediate — Feedstock for sterically hindered phenolic antioxidants and stabilizer components used in polymers and lubricants.
  • Polymer and resin chemistry — Building block for specialty resins, crosslinkers and polymer modification chemistries.
  • Agrochemical and specialty-chemical synthesis — Intermediate in selected agrochemical routes and fine-chemical production (process chemistry dependent).
  • Corrosion inhibitor and additive intermediates — Precursor for certain corrosion inhibitors and additive chemistries where aromatic amines are specified.
  • Analytical & laboratory reagent — Provided in small packs for R&D, analytical standards and method development.
Related and Similar Products
2,4-Dimethylaniline — CAS 95-68-1; 2,6-Dimethylaniline — CAS 87-62-7; 3,4-Dimethylaniline — CAS 95-69-2; Aniline — CAS 62-53-3; o-Xylidine (2-methyl-aniline isomers) — various CAS; 2,3,4-Trimethylaniline — CAS varies; Substituted aniline intermediates used in dye and antioxidant manufacture — various CAS.
FAQs
Q1: What purity is recommended for dye intermediate synthesis?
A1: High-purity grades (≥98%) with low isomeric impurity and low moisture are recommended to minimise side-reactions and color variation.
Q2: What packaging is typical for dye manufacturers?
A2: Drum (180-250 kg) or IBC packaging for production scale; 25 kg drums/pails for batch operations.
Q3: Are analytical reference standards available?
A3: Yes — suppliers typically provide small lab packs with COA for qualification.
